Visit to DILWALO ki City: DELHI

In the Misty Morning of 23^rd Dec, 2010, me along with my family reached New Delhi Railway Station with lot of high spirits for the Trip. A stranger (or a broker) advised us to go to Govt. tourism office & we were guided to ‘India Tourism Network’ in Pahar Ganj. The agent made big time bluff about the services also lied that they are not brokers, we got into a decent hotel named Sweet Homes (Rs1000/night for family room in which the agent had hidden commissions). While going to Ajmer from Delhi, in the cost of Deluxe sleeper buses, ‘India Tourism Network’ cheated us to ordinary sleeper buses far from the mentioned boarding spot.

Delhi tour through New Rajdhani Travels was another havoc, first of all there was no proper guide for tourists plus many spots were missed out stating not vital.

I really appreciated Delhi, being a shopaholic, I got a variety of markets selling range of articles. Few tips for my shopaholic friends. Connaught Place, Karol Bagh, Chandni Chowk, Sundar Nagar, Hauz Khas village, and Dilli Haat are some fine Market places in Delhi. Go for bargains, except at Govt Emporiums, where prices are fixed.

UDAIPUR-The City of Lakes
I reached Udaipur on 29th Dec 2010 early morning, with my family. It takes 10 hrs from Jaipur in Sleeper bus to reach Udaipur. Udaipur means the ‘City of Sunrise’, Maharana Udai Singh founded the city in 1567 on the slopes of Aravali Hills. We stayed in Rajpal Palace, Udaipole. Hotels are pretty expensive in Udaipur (ranges from Rs 1000 to Rs 6000 / night for a decent stay). On 29th itself we hired taxi for city sight scene & the next day for the outskirts. Main Tourist attractions in Udaipur are: 1) Gulab Bagh & Zoo- (Nothing much to be seen so don’t waste much time here) 2) Pichola Lake- (Beautiful view & boating facilities available) 3) City palace & Museum-(worth spending 2-3 hours) 4) Jag Mandir 5) Pratap Smarak (Light & sound show in the evening) 6) Sahelion Ki Bari-(not well-maintained) 7) Fateh Sagar Lake & Nehru Park 8) Haldi Ghati(50 km) 9) Kumbhal Garh (90 km) 10) Shilpgram – Lifetime experience, lot of Indian cultural glimpse with Dance, puppet shows, art & craft & superb food.

Within 2-3 days one can complete the entire trip & capture the memories of an oasis in the dry heart of Rajasthan.

Kodaikanal Expedition 04/07/09

Kodaikanal is a charming hill station, stands amidst sylvan beauty on the southern crest of the upper Palani Hills near Madurai in Tamil Nadu. With its rocks, woods, lovely lake and bracing air, Kodaikanal is an ideal hill resort for the tourists. (www.kodaikanal.com). It took us almost 4 hours to reach our target from Madurai at 10.30 am, we had Punjabi breakfast & then hired a tourist cab to view the misty hill station.


First we took a walk in Coaker walk It is a narrow pedestrian path, constructed by Lt. Coaker in 1872, a one kilometer mountain road which runs along the edge of steep slopes on the southern side of Kodai road. Philomen church was quite a peaceful place, then we saw the Pine forest where many film shootings have taken place, lovely atmosphere, followed by Pillar rocks, silent forest, Guna caves & Silver cascade.



Kodai Lake was another lovely tourist spot, many tourists walk around, sail on, ride on horses & cycles and admire the lake. I & jasmine enjoyed the walk around the striking lake while Prati took a cycling round. Finally we missed our bus & yet another adventure struggling to reach home. All’s well that ends well; we somehow managed getting 2 break buses & at last we covered the 4 hours journey back to Madurai.

Summer Trip

Summer trip to Madurai 03/07/09

At 10.30 pm, three musketeers started the journey to Madurai from Madiwala, Bangalore on 3^rd July. I, my sister Jasmine & friend Prathipa were full set to start our vacation in quest of respite from the daily trauma. My eyes witnessed the awesome southern hills early morning before arriving at our destination. We stayed in Prathipa’s home, her parents were extremely welcoming though people in Tamil Nadu rarely understand Hindi, and I found they are hospitable & warm hearted. Language was not a barier during our trip. After a noon’s rest we started our Madurai tour, first we visited Thirumalai Nayak Palace. This Palace was built in 1636 by King Thirumalai Nayak with the help of an Italian Architect. The building we see today was the main Palace where the King lived. The original Palace Complex was four times bigger than the present structure. This palace consisted mainly of two parts, namely Swargavilasa and Rangavilasa.

Next visit was to the historical Sree Meenakshi Temple, The temple is dedicated to Shiva, known here as Sundareshvara and his consort Parvati or Meenakshi. The temple has 4 towers; north, east, south & west. A visitor who enters the temple through the eastern gateway, first enters this Mandapam(Hall). It was built by Thirumalai Nayakar's wives Rudrapathi Ammal and Tholimamai. In this hall food was once distributed to the devotees who came from far off places. Next to this hall is the Meenakshi Nayaka Mandapa, a spacious columned hall used for shops and stores. This hall has a votive lamp-holder with 1,008 lamps, which are lit on festive occasions and present a spectacular sight. The sculptures on the pillars here relate some of Lord Shiva's Thiruvilayadals (miracles) and also the story of Meenakshi's birth and her life as the princess of Madurai.

It was a memorable day, at last we were dead tired & retired back home. The next day we headed to Kodaikanal.
